Falls from the equipment cause the largest number of injuries sustained in playgrounds.
As a result, it is very important to ensure the condition of the impact absorbing material installed under the equipment is in good condition and continues to provide sufficient protection against serious injury due to falls.
Playground surfacing materials should be checked regularly to ensure they comply with the requirements of the Australian Standards. Loose fill materials should be checked at least annually, whilst Standards require solid materials such as rubber to be tested at installation and thereafter every three years to ensure they continue to provide the required level of impact attenuation.
